CRISIS OF PRIORITIES: Restoring the Physical and Human Foundation of Goshen Community Schools

As Goshen Community Schools (GCS) prepares to finalize a $105 million annual budget of local taxpayer dollars, our community faces a fundamental choice of values. On one side of the scale sits an expansion of central administrative spending; on the other sits the physical and human foundation of our public schools.

The numbers in the 2027 Budget Proposal outline a clear divergence in funding priorities:

  • Luxury Athletics vs. Critical Building Maintenance: While GCS allocates $6.2 million for a turf soccer stadium, essential facility repairs—including "orange-coded" decaying school roofs and $4.3 million in junior high HVAC needs—have been deferred. These facility gaps coincided with overheated classrooms and emergency early dismissals at Prairie View Elementary and Goshen High School in early September.

  • Executive Windfalls vs. Frontline Austerity: While central office certified salary lines surge to $700,000 and Board member compensation is projected at an effective rate of over $300 an hour, classroom aides (paraprofessionals who serve the highest-need students) are restricted to 10-cent/hr annual step raises and capped at 29.5 hours per week, placing them just below the 30-hour threshold required for health insurance eligibility.

  • The 2028 Shortfall & The 2030 Getaway: Official district projections show a $4.78 million annual shortfall hitting the Operations Fund starting in 2028. GCS's proposed trajectory relies on spending down its $5.8 million Operating Referendum cash cushion to cover operational expenses today—deferring the visibility of the structural deficit until approximately 2030, after upcoming board election cycles conclude and after the vote putting into place their priorities concludes. This would leave Goshen taxpayers holding the bag to pay for this Administration's luxury priorities.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Show Up & Fill a Seat: Join local residents at the GCS Administration Building (613 E. Purl St., Goshen, IN) on Monday, September 14, at 6:00 PM. Simply coming to sit in the room sends a clear message to leadership that Goshen is watching. Of course speaking is welcome as well.

  • Contact Your Board Members: You can email Board members directly to share your thoughts on these budget priorities before the final vote. Their official emails are listed on the Board Members page: https://www.goshenschools.org/boardmembers
